First of all, I am going to be making the switch to WordPress very soon. Tumblr is really cramping my style in terms of the fact that people dont want to read 5000 word essays on trivial things when theyre actually on Tumblr to find anorexia diets/soft corn porn photos featuring minors with Taylor Swift lyrics photoshopped into the bottom of the frame. No offense Tumblr….

Second, I can’t post a billion pictures which is really annoying. I actually had to use this thing my mother once told me about -discretion. It turns out, world, I really can’t have it all…. Oh well. Such is life.

So basically, above are my favorite ensembles I saw from photos that I stole from the Associated Press. I cannot pick ONE favorite (like picking between my children, although we all know I will definitely have a favorite child, and I definitely hope my children never see this… all 17 of them), but I am going to have to say its a tie between Diane Kruger’s purple Prada getup and Emma Stone’s Lanvin dress.

First of all, Diane Kruger could wear [insert any cliche hideous item: trash bag, burlap sack full of potato skins, caution tape, etc etc] and still look stunning. I feel like getting cast as “Helen: the face that launched 1,000 ships” in Troy was probably the biggest ego boost ever (I would be cast as Shlumpy 3rd best friend). Point is, she’s gorgeous. When I first saw this ensemble I cocked my head and kind of had a “Huh??” reaction to it. It is a somewhat unconventional silhouette, and the color of the dress and necklace are right at the borderline of Purple Big Bird and perfection. Obviously since it is my tie for favorite- it is more perfection. Brava Diane… Brava.

I immediately loved Emma Stones adorable little dress. I love the shape, the juicy color, and even the quirky plastic adornments which are stitched onto the entire thing. It is SO fun, so girly, so retro, so cute. I already love Emma Stone and seeing her in this dress just made me want to grab both her hands, bounce on a trampoline with her while staring into each other’s eyes… laughing… eating tootsie rolls…. smiling…

The rest are some of my other favorites although there were many more I wish I could post. And of course… while there were more than enough outfits on the red carpet that just did NOT do it for me- I am trying to be a more positive human being. I will only say this: Beyonce’s dress was nauseating (still love you B) and K. Stew: NO. NO. NO NO NO NO NO. Not in my house. Not in anyone’s house. Not on this planet.

Beard Awards + Fun Facts coming up. Love yall!

Met Gala and Beard Awards

I have just returned to my humble abode after a romp in the Big Apple and I am having a panic attack. The influx of information, pictures, congratulatory tweets, and envy-because I am sitting at home with Mario Badescu drying lotion on my face- has become very overwhelming.

Expect the longest article to ever be written, longer than Infinite Jest and Swanns Way put together- on Met Gala, on Beard awards, on how I wish I was at both events simultaneously and how that’s just one reason I wish I had an identical twin (that is just slightly uglier than me). Expect drooling, expect shock, expect awe, expect photos, expect a novel on the puzzle that is K.Stew: her facial expression, her dress, and her mummified club feet at Met Ball.

I hope you all are better than I am currently. Need a beta blocker. Need a brown bag to breathe into. Need James Franco to shave and to stop appearing to public events stoned.

Sincerely Yours,

Rox

PS. Holy shit I need to get to Next restaurant in Chicago NOW (winner of Best New Restaurant at Beard Awards). They change themes every three months and they are currently doing an homage to El Bulli…. this could be my last opportunity. I just fainted.

I was really busy with work (eating, watching netflix in bed, baking, sobbing to Steel Magnolias, eating more, thinking about working out, taking up knitting instead) but alas, I have recovered from my Winter hibernation in good spirits and enthusiasm to report to you that I have had many culinary adventures!

Part I: Some delicious sandwich recommendations from yours truly: East/West Coast Edition-

Ahhhh, the Bay Cities Godmother. How could I neglect thee? Sandwiched between two freshly baked, crispy halves of french bread still hot from the oven lies a heavenly mixture of Italian dressing, peppers (mild or spicy), provolone, genoa salami, mortadella coppacola, and prosciutto. If you want the full experience, order a large with the works and a craft beer to wash it all down. Bay Cities Italian Deli also serves up amazing pastrami and hot meatball sandwiches. Don’t leave without a freshly baked baguette for extra carb-induced guilt.

For the (L)East Coasters, we have another highly publicized sandwich which lives up to its reputation, the Spuckie at Brookline’s own Cutty’s. The Spuckie is a thin sandwich which features ingredients all made in house including mozzarella, carrot olive salad, finocchiona, mortadella, and hot capicola. The flavor is unique and mighty tasty. Order it with a side salad with their house-made dressing, and house-made lemonade. For being the small, local operation that it is, Cutty’s packs a major punch. I am so impressed by the dedication of the people who run the place. I also have to include their roast beef sandwich which earns them as many accolades in my heart as the Spuckie does. God Bless.

Spuckie News

Bonus picture is the pork fat for sale. Which I bought. In real life. Dont tell my cardiologist. Or my Mother.

Last but not least, an amazing burger that I can’t get out of my dreams. The Regal Beagle’s Brunch Burger. My friends are honestly getting annoyed with me because I will not stop talking about this meal. My writing about it wont do it justice. A warm toasty brioche bun sandwiches lettuce, tomato, gruyere, and a perfectly juicy beef patty but WAIT: add grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, an over medium fried egg, and sriracha (I am a devout member of the David Chang Church of Sriracha if anyone does not know this about me yet). I ate this burger on a date recently. I had condiments and grilled vegetables dangling off of my face and covering my lap. It was attractive. Do yourself a favor and eat this burger. You probably need the 5 pounds, and hey, seeing you a little fatter will do wonders for my self-esteem.

There you have it. Just a miniature summary of more reviews to come (I have done A LOT of eating these last few months). More coming soon plus recipes for my green corn tamales, prosciutto-wrapped dates, strawberry shortcake, paella, homemade pizza, and more!

Hibernating?

Hibernation indeed. Signing off,

Rox

YES. THE COUNTRY. I know it seems ambitious but you’re probably seriously underestimating the size of our mouths and gullets <strike>and thighs</strike> (and opportunity to be chic, jetsetting, sexy vixens on a mission to rid the world of crime).

Of course we’re biased towards our beloved In’N’Out double double animal style but we promise we will give 5 guys, white castle, 5 napkin burger, Fathers Office, Minetta Tavern, Craigie on Main, Umami Burger and more… a fighting chance.

This investigative work will be grueling and difficult… but well do it for the love of our [3] readers.

Halloween Edition!

Coming from the girl who shakes in terror at the entire Scary Movie franchise, I can admit I get scared a little too easily. But that doesn’t stop me from watching seriously terrifying movies that will haunt me for an eternity (I sleep with a nightlight!)

I have seen a lot a lot of movies mostly because I really enjoy procrastinating. I also know a lot of random facts about films/directors/actors etc. which makes it extremely difficult and perhaps even impossible to beat me in the Movie game. Although you can beat me in practically any other game that involves hand eye coordination.

Because I love movies and because I love looking under my bed, in my closet (then looking both places a 2nd…maybe a 3rd “just in case” time) before I go to sleep, AND because it is October and Halloween is creeping up on us- I decided to compile a few of my favorite scary movies! What are your fav scary movie recommendations (Tweet at me, Little___Lamb, thats 3 underscores)?

So buy some adult diapers, extra lightbulbs, a padlock for your door, some popcorn, and a prescription for ativan and settle down (preferably with someone you can force to be your boyfriend/girlfriend for the night) with one of these frightening films!

Classic Horror: Psycho: Obviously. Despite this movie classic being as most white girls say nowadays “ew…this, like… isnt colorful,” Psycho still is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Whether or not you have seen this movie, practically everyone knows the famous shower scene with Janet Leigh (for a reason). You cant really go wrong with this movie no matter what generation, the movie is compelling, brilliantly-made, and if you dont know the twist already… well youre probably reading this from your laptop beneath a giant rock.

(watch Vertigo and Rear Window too)

Best Supernatural Horror: A Tale of Two Sisters: I dont know if I can honestly review this movie since I watched the entire thing through a very small crack between my fingers but I will anyway. For some reason Asians have really mastered the horror genre, our shitty American versions of The Ring and The Grudge were both originally Japanese (Ringu, anyone?). This Korean movie is gorgeous, intricate, and absolutely terrifying. The plot is unique and super disturbing and even at the very end when you finally piece together what is going in (HUGE TWIST!!), there are still questions left unanswered. I would liken this movie to a horror version of Memento, youre kind of like “whoa… whats going on?” the entire time but in a good way. This movie is perfect if youre looking for absolute terror that will haunt you for at least several weeks in which you dont want to leave your apartment or the safety of your bed. A must-see.

Ginger Snaps: Most people haven’t heard of this movie because its Canadian (yes.. they make movies too), but its one of my all-time favorites. Not necessarily as scary, its extremely entertaining, oftentimes very funny, and sometimes kind of sad. The movie is actually allegorical but Ill skip that mumbo jumbo. About two sisters in high school, this movie parodies the modern horror movie pretty well and is a unique and compelling story. Also a must-see and perfect for Halloween.

Sixth Sense: Shyamalan’s best movie in my opinion. If you haven’t seen this, I’d be kind of shocked. For those who haven’t, this movie is pretty scary, heart-wrenching, and ultimately pretty surprising (definitely an example of a great plot twist). This is a pretty classic go-to for a picky audience.

Best Serial Killer Movies: Se7en: Honestly, this movie doesn’t get enough credit. First off you have Morgan Freeman, an actor who can pretty much do no wrong (who doesn’t love that silky voice?). Second of all you have 90s Brad Pitt. I don’t have to expand on that sentence… don’t get me started. Third and most importantly, you have a super well-thought out, VERY compelling suspenseful plot with a brilliant villain. The last time I watched this with my friends, the only sound uttered was “No way! No way! No way! No way!” for the ending 30 minutes. I picked this instead of Silence of the Lambs so you should fosho see it if you haven’t. A must-see (all of these are must-sees I guess).

Best choice for Halloween Viewing Party: Creepshow: Although not the most well-made film, Creepshow is cheesy Halloween perfection! A compilation of Stephen King’s most famous horror stories, this movie is actually several movies in one. They are fun, they are cheesy, they are SO 80s!! This movie is a blast to watch, its funny and its super campy.

Best Halloween TV Shows: Twilight Zone: I have seen practically every episode of the original Twilight Zone (I went through a weird phase in elementary school ok?). Although they are black and white, they are super retro and sometimes pretty scary. Plus you look cool and smart when watching black and white- everyone knows that.

American Horror Story (currently on FX): Dalz and I watch this show every week together. At first I couldn’t tell whether I absolutely loved or absolutely hated this show. It tries very hard to be weird and avant-garde and it succeeds. The camera work and plot sometimes make you feel like you just woke up drooling from a grand mal seizure. I cant tell whether the producers of this show (from the guys who did Nip/Tuck and Glee.. weird combo) have any idea of what direction this show is moving in but Im watching anyway because Dylan McDermott is usually half-naked and because the show is at least interesting and unique. Try it out but know this show is fucking weird.

Bonus Movie- my favorite horror film! The absolute film classic- Confessions of a Psycho Cat! Apparently “exciting, exotic, and EVIL!,” and also strikingly similar to my life -“HER BED WAS HER LAIR!”

I ordered this movie offline. I need it.

I’m aware that I’ve been a ‘lil bit M.I.A. with this blog stuff, but that’s just because all my magic is simply behind the scenes. Anyways, this weekend Roxie and I had a falling out and have decided to cease the existence of Two Girls One Kitchen.

JUST KIDDING.

We aim for total world domination and seek to take over the blogosphere, one recipe at a time. Therefore, we could never give up the blog no matter how many uh, calories come between us. We promised to never let sugary goodness come in the way of anything.

Back to the point. This weekend, I endeavored far and wide (I actually just needed a well-deserved vacation) and I took a jaunt to a tiny little city called New York. Of course, being the epicureans that Roxie and I are, I took this getaway as an excuse to indulge in some very delicious food and thought I would share some highlights on the blog. (All the walking around downtown burned off calories….) This isn’t a cooking-recipe-sugarchaos post per say, but more of a review of some excellent food establishments I have the pleasure of presenting to my culturally-aware, intellectually-ravenous audience. If you’re having trouble grasping the theme of my trip, here’s a pretty good depiction of what I (successfully) sought to emulate.

If you need a pick-me-up after a long day of <strike>scoping out cute boys</strike> shopping, look no further than La Colombe, which was BY FAR one of the best lattes I have ever had in my life.

If you want to see a semi-famous model-DJ-photographer-partygirl, then head to The Smile to do a lil bit of brunching and <strike>stalking</strike> people-watching. Owned by Carlos Quirarte, profiled in the aforementioned video, The Smile has become a hipster hangout known for more than just the scene. Their baked eggs with avocado are to die for and the grapefruit mimosas are also excellent. Since I was technically “on vacation,” a little champagne was more than necessary for my long, strenuous morning of waking up and going to brunch…

Walking into the hotel in dresses and heels while the staff sets out coffee for breakfast was a little rough. I think I need another vacation to recover from my vacation. #whitegirlproblems

Tweet me, follow me, stalk me, whatever. xo @valleyofthedalz

Ahhh. This is what peace and serenity looks like.

Cupcakes- The Elvis
For reasons yet unknown to me, I felt it...

Peanut Butter Banana Cupcake (The Elvis)

You aint nothin but a hound dog...

Banana Batter (still no electric mixer)

Banana cupcakes fresh out da oven

PB frosting pipetted on top

Ziploc pipette bag (pro move)

I did NOT drink the leftovers of this.

Finished Product! Bacon bits underneath!

Cacharel sunnies

Thakoon coat that I will kill you for.

Cupcakes- The Elvis

For reasons yet unknown to me, I felt it necessary to do a spur of the moment baking tour de force WITHOUT DALYA. I just googled the term “tour de force” to make sure I was using it correctly (my shits backed up, yo) and this is the definition I found-

“an impressive performance or achievement that has been accomplished or managed with great skill : his novel is a tour de force.”

Indeed. Anyhoo, yesterday I whipped up a batch of cupcakes while I was bored and I realized- I have not been utilizing the cupcake tray enough. The cupcake is truly a delight and although I often hear people saying “they already had their 15 minutes of fame” (a la froyo craze) I believe theyll stick around for a while. Here is why-

1. They are small(ish) and “dieting” girls dont feel as bad eating a small(ish) cupcake as they do heaping a large slice of fatty cake on their plate (hips)

2. They are cute and small and fun to decorate.

3. They are easy to pass around and share with friends.

4. The guilt factor is worth repeating. As in “It was just one cupcake. Who cares?!?!”

The cupcakes Im going to make today are copies of my favorite cupcake from Crumbs Bakeshop of Los Angeles/NYC. I could probably <strike>(I have)</strike> eat 3 of these cupcakes in one sitting. They are absolutely divine, and if you close your eyes while chewing, you hear little angels singing and see them floating around on the underside of the your eyelids. Theyre that good. BEHOLD! The PB+Banana Cupcake (1st photo)!!!

When I got to thinking about these cupcakes, I began to think about Elvis. Yes, that Elvis. Here he is- say Hello buddy! According to my father, the presiding source of knowledge on absolutely everything- Elvis’ favorite flavor combo was morphine and quaaludes. AFTER THAT, it was peanut butter, banana, honey, and bacon on sourdough bread. When I remembered this I got a cooky idea in my big cooky head. PERHAPS half of the cupcakes can be PB+Banana and HALF can be Elvis, with some kind of BACON flavoring (Just so you know, I am a firm believer that bacon goes with anything and everything). I will let you know if this is disgusting because it very well could be…

I am adapting my plan of action from this recipe from Epicurious.

Before we get started:

-SONG’O’THEWEEK: (miss u Elvis)

-Thing that you should buy me if you love me and read this blog (Im aware I have around 2 followers more or less):

These cacharel sunnies are my new obsession. I have been lusting over them for several months now and they even come in jolly rancher colors although I think the nude is probably universally flattering. You can buy me these if you want… no big deal.

Trend Im loving: TARTAN. Ideally I would like to wear an entirely tartan outfit at some point this fall. Everyone is going to love it. Watch out boys….Still waiting to buy this Thakoon Fall 2011 jacket…

Again… if you have 600 dollars to just throw around hollah atcha’ girll!

Thats enough lusting over things I cant buy…. HERES THE RECIPE!

Cupcakes:

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 very ripe large bananas, peeled

1/2 cup sour cream

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

1 large egg

1 large egg yolk

Frosting:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

1/2 cup smooth peanut butter (do not use old-fashioned or freshly ground)

1/2 bar bittersweet (at least 60% cocoa) baking bar (I used ghirardelli)

1-2 strips turkey bacon, finely chopped (keepin it kosher ya’ll)

preparation

For cupcakes:
Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F. Line 12 standard (1/3-cup) muffin cups with paper liners. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl to blend. Mash bananas with fork in another medium bowl until smooth. Mix sour cream and vanilla into bananas.

Using electric mixer, beat sugar and butter in large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg and egg yolk and beat until well blended. Add flour mixture in 3 additions alternately with banana-sour cream mixture in 2 additions, beginning and ending with flour mixture and beating just until blended after each addition. Divide batter among prepared muffin cups (generous 1/4 cup for each).

Bake cupcakes until tester inserted into center of each comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Transfer cupcakes to rack and let cool completely. Cut a cylinder into the center of every cupcake and save the removed portions.

For frosting:
Sift powdered sugar into large bowl. Add cream cheese, butter, and peanut butter. Using electric mixer, beat mixture until smooth. Cool in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. Spoon frosting into a medium size ziploc bag. Cut a very small corner off the corner of the bag and squeeze the icing (less than 1 tsp) into the holes in the cupcakes. Drop a large pinch of the bacon bits on top of the PB frosting. Put the removed portions of the cakes back on top and pat back into place. Use ziploc to frost the tops of the cupcakes however you like.

Heat bittersweet chocolate in microwave 1 minute (I know, I know no stovetop). Drizzle liquid chocolate on top of frosting and use whatever you want- a piece of dark chocolate, a banana chip, an eyeball, a rusty nail- as a little centerpiece!

PS. bacon was incredible inside. 2 dozen cupcakes devoured within 6 hours. I will definitely be making these again.

PPS. These are SUPER rich so get a glass of milk or if youre a lactose intolerant loser like me- almond milk! MMM!

FIN.

PB+J Loaf (adapted from- Anger Burger)- reminiscing on childhood...

Our spacious, modern kitchen.

Dalz rolling her eyes at me, sassafrass

butter+peanut butter. 0 calories.

Illicit drugs

The blackberry jam

We cant afford an electric mixer #broke

mmmm.....mesmerizing....

Closest I ever got to being an artist...

Pretzel, PB, choco frozen sammiches

PB+J Loaf (adapted from- Anger Burger)- reminiscing on childhood and elementary school memories/nightmares

What was your favorite lunch to bring to school? (if you were allowed to have lunchables, you are a very lucky, lucky child. the packaging was not “eco friendly” enough for my parents)

What was your favorite childhood snack?

Your favorite elementary school story?

I dont know about you, but when I think of PB+J I think of the good ole days when I could eat carbs without feeling like a horrible human being. Peanut butter and jelly is quintessential kid food and although I may LOOK older, appearances can be deceiving. I am essentially an 11 year old trapped within a 21 year olds body. And this 11 year old can eat…

Tonight Dalz and I reconnected with our past, and I tried to pretend like I wasnt the girl who threw up strawberry milkshake in front of the entire 2nd grade class. We chose to do this PBJ loaf mostly because we already had all the ingredients (you probably do too! go ahead… go look… I know you want to). It was super easy to make and it tastes pretty yum. The peanut butter-y taste is present without the cake being too sweet and since Dalz and I chose to do a a blackberry jam, the cake is speckled with a little bit of fruit tartness (sounds gross, tastes good). Basically, this loaf is like a grown up PBJ sammich. Definitely worth a try-

CULTURAL PAIRING:

The Sandlot- classic movie about a group of baseball playing-hooligans. Only “sports” movie I have ever liked (what are sports and how can I play?). Endearing, adorable, and entertaining. Liked it as a kid, like it now.

We’re Going to be Friends- White Stripes: Still like this song. Am I old? Am I lame?

Dalz: “I have no memories of my childhood, I wasn’t hipster yet. I didnt have my first memory until I read Sartres La Nausee in a turtleneck at the age of 7.5 years old. I dont like children. They are so mainstream like EVERYONE was a kid. Get over yourself!”

RECIPE FOR THIS DELICIOUS CHILDHOOD TREAT!

——————————————————————————————————-

Makes a 9×5″ Loaf

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup whole milk, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 cup creamy, all natural peanut butter (with no added palm oil)
2 oz (1/2 stick) butter, room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
3 eggs, room temperature
1/2 cup jam

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9×5″ loaf pan and coat it with sugar.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a small bowl. In another bowl, stir the jam to break it up and get it loose.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the peanut butter, butter, and sugars on medium high speed for a full five minutes. The mixture won’t get light and fluffy and the sugar won’t dissolve, but the mixture will be less grainy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each one and scraping down the sides of the bowl.

Beat in half the flour mixture, then the milk and vanilla extract, then the rest of the flour, scraping the sides of the bowl. The batter will be thin. Pour half the batter into the loaf pan and dollop with jam. Pour the rest of the batter over the jam and sprinkle the top with large grain sugar.

Bake the loaf for about 50 minutes. The time for this one really depends on your oven, so keep checking. If the edges start to get too brown, loosely tent some tin foil over the top and keep baking. Then bake for another 10-20 minutes or until a toothpick in the middle comes out clean.

Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn the cake out onto a cooling rack and let cool completely.

AND PB+CHOCOLATE+PRETZEL SANDWICHES- pretty easy, if you cant figure these out… you probably cant read this blog in the first place….

UPCOMING POST: Our “friend” Michelle’s 20th...

UPCOMING POST: Our “friend” Michelle’s 20th birthday cake- a vanilla double layer buttercream. (I will reveal my deepest darkest secret, the key to moist, sensually exciting yellow cake). Expect some John Hughes references (RIP miss u brotha), expect some early Bjork action (my Bjork obsession can be explained at a later date, LOVED the swan dress…google it if youre unfamiliar) in the form of a Sugarcubes song. Its gonna be just rosey!

But anyhoo, here is the point of my post- you’re probably wondering why on earth you should read another word from us, just two young things runnin about the town, painting it red, and what not. You should listen to us because it will make ME happy and it will give you yummy ideas on how to pretend you know how to cook for a potential boyf/girlfriend. Here is a little more about us because we’re sure youre desperate to find out more!

I think this is my essence in one photo. This is Dalya, this is her essence (rabid animal).

Hi World! Welcome to the best blog you’ll ever read, ever. There are two people that make up this dream team- Dalya Benor and Roxie Baker. We are unemployed lazy beggars (students) in Boston. We were both birthed in Los Angeles and we are now aliens in a large city that hosts some of the most prestigious universities in the world. we go to harvard. jk we go to BU.

Anyway! Since this is my first post, I will explain a little about our project and a little bit about how this blog will work. Dalya and I love art, fashion, movies, music, and most of all- EATING. Dalya and I are what you might call fat. Ever since we moved into our new apartment building, Dalya and I have begun experimenting with baking and cooking. There have been some successes. There have also been some disasters. We decided there are probably a lot of other students (and peeps in general!) that would like to learn how to cook and bake cool delish dishes and desserts. We also decided that since we also love movies/fashion/music/art, we will post recipes, instructions, and groovy pictures AND then give you a corresponding movie, music, and/or fashion set we are currently digging. Its a cool concept eh?!

Anyway, stay tuned because we will be posting our first (hopefully successful) dish and you will probably be blown away by the insane amount of intellectual prowess and cultural knowledge we possess.
